FAQs
How has Smartpipe been qualified for high pressure onshore applications?
We have designed, tested and qualified Smartpipe to API 15s second edition.
Has the performance of Smartpipe been tested for various harsh types of service?
Smartpipe uses materials with demonstrated performance in various industries. We have carried out long term customer driven testing for oil, gas, condensate, fuel, and various types of chemicals.
In what applications does Smartpipe add the most commercial and technical value?
High pressure, large diameter, right of way constrained applications where existing infrastructure is in need of replacement.
What lengths, pressures and diameters is Smartpipe able to be produced in?
We currently manufacture and install in excess of 3 miles of continuous lengths up to 2,000 psi and nominal diameters from 6in to 16in.
Does Smartpipe have experience in getting the pipe approved with federal and state regulators?
Every Smartpipe installation to date has been installed either under a state issued waiver vetted by PHMSA or as a special permit issued directly from PHMSA. To date, the only class 3 special permits issued to pipeline operators for composite pipe are for Smartpipe projects.
Why does Smartpipe opt for a site produced system instead of manufacturing at home base?
By manufacturing Smartpipe onsite, we eliminate the transportation constraints associated with reels, which can limit both pipe diameter and continuous installation length. This enables longer continuous pulls with fewer intermediate connections, reducing excavation and right of way disruption.
What is the speed of Smartpipe manufacturing and installation?
Smartpipe is manufactured and simultaneously installed at a rate of 3-4 ft/minute.
How do you terminate Smartpipe and make connections once installed?
Smartpipe has designed and fully qualified a robust compression connector system. These connectors are carbon steel, stainless steel, or CRA.
How does Smartpipe address integrity management once installed?
Smartpipe has a fiber optic monitoring solution that is integrated into the body of the system. This allows for real time 24/7 monitoring for 3rd party intrusion and leak detection.
How do you install the pipe?
As the Smartpipe system is being manufactured on site, it is pulled through an existing host pipe utilizing winches at the exit section of the pipe being remediated.
What is the design life of Smartpipe?
Smartpipe is designed for up to a 50 year life in the field.
How does the Smartpipe flow assurance compare to the steel pipeline it’s being pulled into?
The general rule of thumb is that the host pipeline will be reduced by one nominal diameter size.
Where Smartpipe Fits
